Divers found the body of a 5-month-old girl in a South Carolina creek on Thursday afternoon, the Associated Press reports. Her mother has been charged with unlawful conduct toward a child.

The girl’s mother, Sarah Lane Toney, was taken into custody on Tuesday after telling a neighbor that she had put her baby into the creek by her house near Myrtle Beach, police said.

“I went into the water with her, and I was unable to hold on to her,” she said at her bond hearing. “I didn’t intentionally put her in any danger. I was going with her, and I wasn’t able to hold on to her when the water sucked me in.” Bond was denied.

At a news conference on Thursday, Horry County police Chief Saundra Rhodes said that the baby was found less than 75 yards from Toney’s home. An autopsy has been ordered, and Toney’s older daughter has been turned over to the care of her father.

Toney, who has an record that includes two arrests on criminal domestic violence charges, has not been charged in her daughter’s death.
