Ben Carson: Prison Proves Being Gay Is "Absolutely" A Choice

Ben Carson, a conservative politician known for speaking candidly but not at all delicately or even coherently, has a new bon mot for you: Prison makes people gay.
Carson was on CNN's New Day this morning, and when anchor Chris Cuomo asked the neurosurgeon if he thought being gay is a choice, he replied, "Absolutely." He elaborated with a troubling example:
Because a lot of people who go into prison go into prison straight — and when they come out, they're gay. So, did something happen while they were in there? Ask yourself that question.
This is an interesting position for someone to take following the announcement of their exploratory committee will run for the 2016 Republican nomination.
After some pressing from Cuomo, visibly agitated by the strident ignorance before him, Carson goes on:
"Why do gay people want to get married? Why do they say they want to get married? Because they want to have various rights—property rights, visitation rights," he said. "Why can't any two human beings, I don't care what their sexual orientation is, why can't they have the legal right to do those things? That does not require changing the definition of marriage."
