A Danish zoo—not the one that killed a young giraffe and fed it to the lions as a form of population control, but a different Danish zoo—has announced that it will thaw and dissect a young female lion that has been kept in a freezer since it was put down nine months ago to avoid inbreeding.

According to the Associated Press, the Odense zoo said the animal will be dissected Thursday to coincide with schools’ fall break.

“We are not chopping up animals for fun. We believe in sharing knowledge,” Zookeeper Michael Wallberg Soerensen said. “It is important not to give animals human attributes that they do not have.”

“Having her in the same enclosure as her own father would mean that he would start mating her at some point and that would lead to inbreeding,” he said. “We don’t want to deliberately allow inbreeding.”

Sorensen said that the public dissection is “not for entertainment” but rather to offer “a closer-to-the-animals experience.”
