Besmirched CBC radio host Jian Ghomeshi has been charged with four counts of sexual assault and one charge of overcoming resistance (choking), according to the Toronto Police Service.

Ghomeshi surrendered to police today and will appear in court this afternoon.

Yesterday, Ghomeshi dropped his $55 million civil lawsuit against the CBC, which he filed after the radio organization fired him last month amid multiple allegations of sexual abuse from different women.

Since Ghomeshi's firing, at least nine women have alleged that the radio host sexually abused or harassed them.

Ghomeshi, for his part, published a rambling, 1,500-word message on his Facebook page defending himself against the allegations, which has since been deleted. He has also deleted his Twitter account.
