The sectarian violence in and around Iraq's capital continued this afternoon when a car bomb killed 12 people and wounded 30 in Sadr City, a Shiite district of Baghdad. While no one has yet taken responsibility for the attack, past bombings in the area have been the work of Sunni militants.

Last night, Shiite militiamen killed at least 48 Sunni militants — 44 detainees were found dead at a police station in Baquba near Baghdad, and four militants were found in the streets of the Shiite neighborhood of Benouk in Baghdad.

Today's attack marks the second time in a week that Shiites have been targeted in Sadr City — a suicide bomber killed 16 people in the area last Wednesday.
