WikiLeaks source Private Chelsea Manning has sued U.S. Defense Secrety Chuck Hagel and her military jailers over their failure to provide the necessary– and once assured–medical treatment for her gender dysmorphia.

In July, Hagel approved Manning for a "rudimentary" treatment program, an unprecedented move made after the Army's request to transfer her to a civilian prison was denied. This new suit, filed today on her behalf by the American Civil Liberties Union, contends that care has since been withheld.

It goes on to demand that Manning be provided hormone therapy, permission to follow female grooming standards, and access to qualified medical treatment. According to Chase Strangio, an ACLU attorney and a co-counsel on Manning's case, the military has done little beyond providing Manning with female undergarments.

"The government continues to deny Ms. Manning's access to necessary medical treatment for gender dysphoria, without which she will continue to suffer severe psychological harms," Strangio said in a statement. "Such clear disregard of well-established medical protocols constitutes cruel and unusual punishment."
