A woman in West Hartford, Connecticut was attacked by a black bear Wednesday morning as she was trying to rescue her dog, which the bear was chasing.

The 200-pound bear reportedly chased Sharon Flannery's dog through her West Hartford home's backyard. According to Flannery, the dog, Maggie, ran as fast as it could across to the yard and into the home through a door Flannery had opened. When the bear attempted to follow, Flannery kicked it; the bear, being a bear, bit and clawed Flannery's leg.

“You know, I didn't even feel it,” Flannery told NBC Connecticut. “My adrenaline was popping. I didn't even notice there was blood on my ankle until after I closed the door.”

The bear, along with two of her cubs, climbed a nearby tree, where they were tranquilized by officers from the State Department of Energy and Environmental Protection. The cubs will be relocated, but their mother wasn't so lucky; she was euthanized and tested for rabies.

Flannery was treated for her injuries, which were minor, at a nearby hospital and released.
