Police on Long Island say that a woman who feared her friend was too drunk, and had gotten out of his car to walk home, was then struck and killed by the same man in a drunk-driving accident only minutes later early Saturday morning.

The accident happened at around 4 a.m. Saturday near Setauket, N.Y., police say. The woman, 21-year-old Krystal Berkowitz, had gotten out of 23-year-old Lawrence Pagano's car when she told him she thought he wasn't sober enough to drive, the AP reports.

She was then struck and killed by Pagano as he pulled over, trying to convince her to get back in his car, police say. Berkowitz was pronounced dead on the scene. Pagano has been arrested on charges of driving while intoxicated.
