Resort Near Disney World Swallowed into 60-Foot Sinkhole Maw

A resort building ten minutes from Disney World collapsed and another sank into the ground as a 60-foot wide sinkhole opened underneath early this morning.

There are no reports of injuries and all guests are accounted for, though dozens had to be evacuated:

Guests at the Summer Bay Resort, about 10 minutes from Walt Disney World, called for help, saying they heard loud noises and windows cracking. The estimated 35 people inside the buildings were evacuated.
Two three-story buildings are affected by the 15-foot deep crater, Lake County Fire Rescue Battalion Chief Tony Cuellar said. Rooms as high as the third floor of one building collapsed into the sinkhole, which kept growing Monday morning.

I have a tinfoil hat co-worker, and I like to play the "guess the conspiracy" game and figure out what nefarious plot she will pin any particular current event on. No points awarded if the event does not get a conspiracy theory attached to it (but that's rare).

For this one, I'm guessing HAARP, although sometimes she throws me a curveball and blames it on aliens. (The Sikh Temple shooting was arranged to shut up a documentary filmmaker who was apparently going to release a film that would show the "truth about aliens" last summer. Yeah, instead of just killing the director, TPTB arranged a hit on his father....because of course they did)

Pretty much always been this way. Florida is mostly limestone, As the limestone over time gets eroded away by underground water, heavy rains can cause the overlying ground to erode into the cavity formed in the bedrock.

Where I live, Sinkholes are pretty uncommon, in fact I've never heard of one in my area in 30 years. But in other areas, I would recommend a good escape route.

Sink holes have been happening a lot lately in FL because most of the state rock base is extremely soft limestone, much of it called "coquina" which is shells in limestone and crumbles easily. When the water is drained out of the aquifer the limestone crumbles and sink holes form. The state has had massive population growth over the last 45-50 years. All those people and lawns need water. The additional drain of water lowers the aqifer more. The water in FL largely comes from the Georgia Aquifer and FL and GA have had erratic rainfall for a very long time with extended droughts and then torrential rain storms. This weather make sink holes worse.

As someone who worked for the WDC for 10 years, your headline is erroneous and misleading. To be a "Disney World Resort" the building would have to be on WDC owned land (called "on property). Everything else is "Central FL," "Kissimmee-St Cloud," or (correctly for this hotel) "Clermont." Just to add this hotel is in Lake County. The WDC property in Central FL is in Orange and Osceola counties with the two town names "Lake Buena Vista" and "Reedy Creek."

Well sure, if you're going to allow a corporation to define the words then your assertion is correct. Most human beings prefer to use common sense definitions of words and from that perspective the place is indeed a Disney World Resort. Not to mention this is Gawker and the point isn't to be 100% correct, it is to generate traffic and putting Disney before the resort will generate more traffic just like connecting Apple to the conflict minerals story will create more traffic. In other words both claims are correct, yours, and the headline, yours is technically correct, the headline is easy conveyance of information truthiness correct and since this is America you really shouldn't be expecting anything more than truthiness, especially from a traffic flow maintained site like Gawker.
