Donald Trump Is Stoked About Brexit—On An Unrelated Note, What Is Brexit?
As Donald Trump’s plane landed in Scotland early this morning, the world had just begun to grapple with a vote that has thrown Europe into chaos, and many in the U.S. are seeing as an omen of Trump’s imminent success. And in keeping with tradition, Donald Trump seems to have no idea what any of it means.
The fun started early this morning when Donald Trump tweeted this.
Just arrived in Scotland. Place is going wild over the vote. They took their country back, just like we will take America back. No games!

Scotland, of course, actually voted in favor of staying in the EU by 62 percent to 38 percent, with its First Minister Nicola Sturgeon calling it “highly likely” that the country would hold a new vote on leaving the UK. Details.
Regardless of his customary foundational misunderstanding of the facts, Trump went on, telling reporters at his Turnberry golf course in Scotland that he thinks “it’s a great thing that happened. People are angry, all over the world. People, they’re angry.”
Trump then clarified that the best part of this potential global economic crisis is the boon the plummeting pound could offer his own, personal wealth, “When the pound goes down, more people are coming to Turnberry, frankly.”
According to Politico, one reporter asked Trump if he’d discussed the issue with his foreign policy advisors at all, to which Trump responded, “I’ve been in touch with them, but there’s nothing to talk about.”
This is particularly surprising considering the flack Trump received last week after being asked about the referendum by the Hollywood Reporter, which provided the following delightful exchange:
“And Brexit? Your position?” I ask.
“Huh?”
“Brexit.”
“Hmm.”
“The Brits leaving the EU,” I prompt, realizing that his lack of familiarity with one of the most pressing issues in Europe is for him no concern nor liability at all.
“Oh yeah, I think they should leave.”
Trump elaborated on exactly why he thinks “they should leave” this morning, though, saying,“They’re angry over borders. They’re angry over people coming into the country and taking over, and nobody even knows who they are. They’re angry about many, many things. They took back control of their country. It’s a great thing.”
What does any of that mean? Who cares—Turnberry golf course is going to make a killing.
