Residents of Ayacucho, Peru hold an annual amateur bullfight to mark the closing of the Senor Espiritu Santo festival, a celebration that dates back to the 17th century. This year, things got a little out of hand.

According to Reuters, many participants and onlookers at this year's fight prepared for the violent spectacle in the only reasonable way: they got drunk. One such drunk person was an assistant who took it upon himself to cut the rope separating the audience from the ring, letting the bull out to interact with the crowd. You can probably imagine how that went.

The video above shows a hectic scene. Matadors are toppled over; a boy leaps onto a truck to escape; a woman pushes her reportedly inebriated husband out of the animal's path. At the end of the clip, several people hold and publicly whip the assistant who freed the beast.

At least ten people were injured in the incident.
