Drunk Secret Service Agents Disrupted Active Bomb Investigation: Report
The two allegedly drunk Secret Service agents who reportedly crashed their car into a White House barrier last week interfered with an active bomb investigation and, in their alleged drunken stupor, may have driven over the suspected bomb, according to a report in the Washington Post.
The alleged incident happened last Wednesday night when a woman threw a suspicious package wrapped in a green shirt at a White House security post and told a police officer it was a bomb.
An investigation into the suspicious package was reportedly disrupted about 20 minutes later, when two Secret Service agents—identified as Mark Connolly, a high-ranking member of Obama's detail, and George Ogilvie, a senior supervisor—returned from a party about eight blocks away. The duo, apparently drunk as hell, reportedly drove directly through the taped-off crime scene, over or near the package being investigated, and eventually into a temporary barricade.
The episode was caught on surveillance video. Investigators who have reviewed the tape of the incident say it is not clear if the pair drove very close to or over the suspicious item wrapped in the shirt, one law enforcement official said.
Secret Service officers on duty considered the agents' behavior to be erratic and suspected they were drunk, according to current and former officials familiar with the incident.
The officers wanted to arrest the agents — but a more senior supervisor at the complex told them to let the agents go, the officials said.
A Secret Service official told the Post that Connolly and Ogilvie have been moved to "non-supervisory, non-operational assignments." The woman who threw the package, which was eventually determined to be harmless, was tracked down and interviewed two days later.
The incident comes just five months after former director Julia Pierson resigned from the agency following a series of embarrassing fuck ups at the White House and by Obama's security detail.
