The Westboro Baptist Church has announced its intentions to protest outside of Rowan County Clerk Kim Davis’ courthouse in Morehead, Ky., a St. Louis Fox affiliate reports.

In a statement, tweeted Friday, the WBC says that Davis—who was jailed in September for refusing to issue marriage licenses to any couples in her county, gay or straight—“took an oath to uphold and defend the constitution.” Since the Supreme Court made same-sex marriage “the law of the Doomed USA” back in June, the Church demands that Davis uphold her oath and “DO IT!!”

Good for the Westboro Baptist Church. Team Westboro Baptist Church.

The Church—a Topeka-based congregation of literally dozens who court media coverage by picketing the funerals of soldiers and gay people—adds that the Rowan County clerk is a “self-righteous” hypocrite who has been living in “proud sin,” as she has been divorced and remarried multiple times and engaged in “adultery.”

The right-wing ouroboros is scheduled to go down on Monday, Oct. 19, at 8:30 a.m. ET. Lest you think the Church has gone soft on their anti-LGBT stances, they are also planning to protest the “abomination” of “sodomy” at Morehead State University later that morning. Classic!

I contacted the Westboro Baptist Church and the Rowan County courthouse for comment, and I will update the story if and when either party gets back to me.

Update, 4:28 p.m.: Steve Drain, a member of the Westboro Baptist Church, emphasizes that the protest is focused most directly on what he calls the “rampant hypocrisy of lukewarm Christianity,” not Kim Davis’ efforts to block same-sex marriage in her county.

“God says no divorce and no remarriage, and God says no homosexuality and, therefore, no same-sex marriage,” Drain told me over the phone Saturday. “If [Kim Davis] wants to declare the whole counsel of God and glorify His name...then great.” But, he continued, she should condemn divorces and remarriages, including her own, as strongly as she condemns marriages between same-sex couples.

“But that’s the way that lukewarm Christianity is,” Drain said. “They belly on up to the smorgasbord and say which parts [of God’s word] they want to uphold and which parts they want to wink at.”
