Five-Month-Old Baby Killed on Airport Baggage Carousel in Spain
A five-month-old baby boy was killed on Wednesday night at the Alicante-Elche Airport in Alicante, Spain after his mother, identified as American, placed the baby’s carrier on a baggage belt for oversized luggage.
The specifics of the accident are currently unclear. The New York Daily News reports that the conveyer belt—which might have been activated by placing the baby on the carousel—whisked the infant to the “entrance of the bag drop portal” where he became “tangled and trapped.” CNN reports that the mother put the baby on the belt when she went to reach for something and he was “crushed by the conveyer belt and it killed him." And the Daily Record says the “baby carrier's weight activated the belt and the child was trapped in the rollers in the drop zone."
Though paramedics tried to revive him, he was declared dead at the scene.
The mother, traveling alone with the five-month-old and an older child, had just arrived on a flight from Gatwick airport near London. They were meeting the baby’s father for a vacation and he was waiting outside the baggage claim in the public arrivals hall.
