Grandpa Writes Letter Disowning Daughter After She Disowns Gay Son
Parents disowning their children for coming out is, unfortunately, far too common for 2013. But parents disowning their children for disowning their children for coming out? Not common enough.
Hopefully the practice will catch on now that a letter purporting to be from a "disappointed" grandfather to his "heartless B-word of a daughter" has gone viral.
The letter, which appeared yesterday on the Facebook page of gay-friendly activism-by-apparel brand FCKH8 (previously), was reportedly sent in by a "supporter" of the clothier who provided proof of origin.
In it, the unnamed patriarch scolds his daughter Christine for throwing her son — his grandson — out of the house for being gay (sic throughout):
I'm disappointed in you as a daughter. You're correct that we have a "shame in the family", but mistaken about what it is.
Kicking Chad out of your home simply because he told you he was gay is the real "abomination" here. A parent disowing her child is what goes "against nature".
The only intelligent thing I heard you saying in all this was that "you didn't raise your son to be gay". Of course you didn't. He was born this way and didn't choose it any more than he being left-handed. You however, have made a choice of being hurtful, narrow-minded and backward. So, while we are in the business of [disowning] our children, I think I'll take this moment to say goodbye to you. I now have a fabulous (as the gay put it) grandson to raise, and I don't have time for heartless B-word of a daughter.
[If] you find your heart, give us a call.
-Dad
Though the letter remains unverified, that hasn't stopped thousands from sharing it and expressing their support for Chad and his grandpa.
"It's kinda sweet how he called her 'the b word' instead if a bitch," said one Facebook user. "He respects gays and women."
We've reached out to FCKH8 to see if they could provide us with additional information on the letter's source or the individuals involved and will update with their response.
Update 7:03 p.m.: Luke Montgomery of FCKH8 just emailed us to say the letter was sent in by Chad himself. He adds:
I'm trying to get the teen and his grandpa to come out publicly and do media interviews to spread the word. Right now they are scared and a bit intimidated with all the requests because it seems the kid is not out. I'll forward your contact info to them and work on getting them to speak out because it would be so good for the cause.
