Gunfire Breaks Out at Bryant Park Skating Rink
Two men were shot Saturday night when a gunman opened fire at group of ice-skaters at the Bryant Park ice skating rink in midtown Manhattan.
After panic broke out across the winter scene, the NYPD says it now has a suspect in custody. 16-year-old Corey Dunton allegedly targeted a 20-year-old man, apparently because of the coat he was wearing. The shots were fired shortly after 11 P.M. last night, while the rink was filled with skaters early in the season.
"He took out a gun and was scanning for him with his eyes, and then he shot him three times and ran," a skater named Francis, who didn't give his last name, told the New York Times. "People around me fell to the ice. I fell down, too. Then I got up and ran to the railing like everyone else."
Skaters dropped to the ice and people ran out of the park, through holiday stalls, all while still barefoot after removing their skates and not waiting to pick up their shoes.
The second man shot, an innocent bystander, might be paralyzed from the waist down. Dunton is currently in police custody at the Midtown South precinct, where he has refused to answer questions and asked for a lawyer.
Update: Here's the alleged shooter's Facebook page. Looks like he references the shooting right afterwards.
