Here Are George Zimmerman's Wife's Divorce Terms

George Zimmerman's wife Shellie filed for divorce last week citing "disappointment," and she's asking for life insurance, half of all assets, and the couple's two dogs.

The soon-to-be former Mrs. Zimmerman wants George to pay for a permanent life insurance policy with her named as the beneficiary.

She's also asking for equal distribution of "checking accounts, trusts, partnerships and any unknown assets," including any money that may come from a defamation lawsuit pending against NBC or reimbursement claims against the state of Florida.

Shellie appeared on Good Morning America last week to talk about the divorce, saying that her husband's acquittal in the murder trial over Trayvon Martin's death made him feel invincible, and that he was making some "reckless decisions." Those decisions included shopping for a tactical shotgun from the manufacturer who produced the gun Zimmerman shot Martin with.

Things have been on the rocks for the Zimmerman couple for quite some time. During Shellie's Good Morning America interview, she revealed that she was not staying at home on February 26, 2012, the night Zimmerman shot Martin, because the couple had had an argument.

The couple separated a month after Zimmerman was acquitted.

Wot? I'm fairly certain claims on life insurance are things you give up when you divorce, not demand as part of a divorce. I guess she's sure his life span will be short.

It's like buying a single digit lottery ticket with the potential winning numbers being 1, 2 or 3.

Requests for life insurance coverage after divorce are pretty standard, especially in cases where maintenance, or alimony as it was once called, and/or child support is expected to be paid.

In some cases it's the courts that actually order it.

It is meant to insure that the spouse and children can still support themselves should the former higher income earning spouse die.

In the case, probably a safe bet.

I couldn't understand the policy, until I read what you wrote, so I guess I can see 'some' sense in it. But frankly, I think she should have to make the payments. Whats to stop him from not making the payments, and letting it lapse? I mean he might get in trouble with the courts, but that won't stop the insurance policy from lapsing regardless, I would think.

All this stuff with possible money from that lawsuit and ongoing money just seems odd to me. I've never understood the idea of paying more money to the person after splitting up the assets unless it is child support. Alimony just seems so strange. Maybe I'm wrong about this, but doesn't that come from a time when women were expected to stay home and weren't really allowed to go out and work to support themselves?

Well, I don't know what the deal with the life insurance is, but that sounds like it would be something he would be paying for as an ongoing thing. Also, there was an earlier article talking about him paying her monthly. Plus, there's that defamation case, and I don't understand how that would be money she'd be entitled to. It was defamation against him and it isn't settled, so there isn't an asset there to be split.

I believe she lived along with him in that trailer in the woods. I would imagine that her ability to live and work normally has been damaged by the case. Her reputation has been tarnished right along with his. If you read some of the other comments about her here, it further supports my assertion. She's going to need that money. I am not a fan of alimony in every situation, but this one warrants it.

The suit was launched while they were still married. So yeah, she is entitled to any windfall initiated before they divorce.
