As public schools across the country struggle to keep their music programs afloat, school bands need to get creative about where they're getting their money. Bake sales and car washes were apparently not cutting it for Comeaux High School—so their school band decided to try to raffle off 52 guns. To extend the fun, they planned to draw one lucky winner each week in 2015.

Multiple complaints led the Lafayette Parish School System's Superintendent, Pat Cooper, to put the kibosh on the whole thing. According to KATC, those who participated were none too pleased to hear the raffle had been called off:

According to Cockerham and other sources close to Comeaux High, the fundraiser idea has been done successfully at schools in neighboring parishes. One Comeaux High family member said she bought tickets for both the Comeaux High gun raffle and a similar raffle held at Beau Chene High School in St. Landry Parish.

Superintendent Cooper made sure to stress that he did not oppose gun ownership, but only felt that the band could have found a "more appropriate way to raise money."
