Hillary Clinton's Campaign Staffers Locked Themselves in a Bathroom Yesterday—Or Did They?
Yesterday, my colleague Hamilton Nolan wrote that Chris Christie, governor of New Jersey, was a “poop butt toilet” candidate in the upcoming presidential election. One wonders whether he’d have made the same claim if he had known that several members of Hillary Clinton’s campaign staff were stuck in a bathroom.

“Anyone handy with a credit card door unlock?” Hillary for America Communications Director Jennifer Palmieri tweeted.
Clinton’s campaign is headquartered at 1 Pierrepont Plaza (at the intersection of Pierrepont Street and Clinton Street—no joke!), in Downtown Brooklyn. Although, reportedly, Clinton herself, when she is in the city, works from an office in Midtown Manhattan.
(“The campaign has worked with the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce for guidance on where staffers could find housing,” the New York Times reported after the move. “The chamber suggested Clinton Hill, Bedford-Stuyvesant, Bensonhurst and Dyker Heights, but has not made much progress in convincing staffers to consider these less gentrified neighborhoods, said Carlo A. Scissura, the president and chief executive of the chamber.”)
Anyway. They got stuck in a bathroom! Sad. But then they got out!

“It was a crap situation they were in, that’s for sure. Everyone was a little flushed, but emerged safely, and we’re grateful to all those who helped with their rescue,” a Clinton spokesman, Nick Merrill, told the New York Post in an email. Get it? Crap situation. Flushed. That’s toilet humor.
But also: why were there seven women in what does not look to be a particularly expansive bathroom? Is it possible that this was a staged bit of quirky, relatable humor orchestrated by the campaign’s communications director? And perhaps most importantly: how does their landlord feel about the fact that they just popped out a doorknob?
Clinton’s offices are reportedly on the 10th and 11th floors of the building. A floor plan for the ninth floor is available on the building’s website; here is the portion that shows the restroom:
So, okay: seven toilets in the women’s restroom on the ninth floor. Is it possible that the floors above have fewer toilets? Yes. Is it possible that the photo was not taken in one of the bathrooms in the campaign offices, but instead, perhaps, a lobby bathroom? Yes. It’s possible. At this point, we just don’t know.
