At a press conference this morning, former President Jimmy Carter elaborated on his cancer diagnosis, telling reporters that he has four small melanoma spots on his brain.

Last week, Carter revealed that a malignant tumor had been discovered in his liver. Today he clarified that the cancerous growth was melanoma that doctors believe spread to his liver from another body part, though it’s not clear if it originated in his brain. The vast majority of melanoma, Carter said his doctors told him, starts as skin cancer, though two percent begins internally. He added that it’s likely the cancer will be discovered elsewhere in his body.

He scheduled to begin radiation treatment today.

“I was surprisingly relieved,” he said of receiving the diagnosis. “I’m ready for anything. And I’m looking forward to the adventure.”
