Kidnapping survivor Hannah Anderson spoke to Today this morning to clarify certain details of her ordeal—specifically the reasons behind her phone, text, and mail contact with her kidnapper—though she says that she's not ready to discuss the full story yet.

Anderson was taken from San Diego by a close family friend, James DiMaggio, and brought to Idaho. Horseback riders by a place called the River of No Return spotted her with her DiMaggio and rescue teams retrieved her a few hours later.

In the brief interview, Anderson says that she texted DiMaggio on the day of her abduction because he was scheduled to pick her up from cheerleading camp. Then the letters from a year ago, she says, were to discuss difficult times she had with her mother:

“Me and him would talk about how to deal with it. And I’d tell him how I felt about it. And he helped me through it. They weren’t anything bad. They’re just to help me through tough times.”

Anderson devoted much of the short interview to thank everyone who helped to locate and rescue her and to briefly discuss her mother and brother Ethan, both of whom were killed in San Diego before DiMaggio took Hannah with him to Idaho.

The DiMaggio family is calling for a paternity test to see if DiMaggio might be the biological father of Hannah and Ethan, though the Anderson family has denied this is a possibility.
