This weekend, at the 2015 DARPA Robotics Challenge, robots built by teams from around the world will accomplish complex tasks like driving a vehicle and walking up stairs. This is a compilation video of those robots falling down. Laugh at them now, with whatever short-lived impunity we may still have.

“It’s amazing how we anthropomorphize these things,” DARPA program manager Dr. Gill Pratt said at a media briefing yesterday, IEEE Spectrum reports. “It’s a pile of aluminum and copper wire and software. I don’t cheer for my laptop. But people cheer for these [robots]. And of course when it falls, we all feel terrible, ‘Uh, it got hurt.’”

Is that how we all feel, Dr. Pratt?
