According to a statement posted today by Abigail "Abby" Hernandez's lawyer, the 15-year-old endured "numerous acts of unspeakable violence" while being held in captivity for nine months. Hernandez was abducted last October walking home from school in Conway, NH. Nathaniel Kibby, 34, was arrested by police last month in connection to Hernandez's kidnapping.

From Michael Coyne, the family's lawyer's statement:

Abby needs and wants some time and space to physically and emotionally heal. It is going to be a long process in pursuit of justice for Abby and for Abby to get physically and emotionally stronger. We do not intend to have this case tried in the press. As the justice system moves forward, and the evidence is revealed, questions about this horrific event will be answered. Abby was violently abducted by a stranger. For many months, she suffered numerous acts of unspeakable violence. Through her faith, fortitude and resilience, she is alive today and home with her family.

Zenya Hernandez, Abby's mother, has previously stated that when she was reunited with her daughter, Abby was pale, thin, and unable to eat solid foods.

It's still unclear what exactly happened to Hernandez while she was being held, but police are currently investigating Kibby's property—which includes a mobile home and a storage container—the Boston Globe reports:

Public defenders appointed to represent Kibby had asked the judge not to allow the trailer and container to be moved until they have had an opportunity to thoroughly investigate both. Prosecutors have released few details of Hernandez's disappearance, and have not specified any other crimes they believe Kibby committed.

Kibby's has claimed he is innocent. He faces seven years in prison and a $4,000 fine if convicted of a felony kidnapping charge and is being held on a $1 million cash bail.
