M.I.A's New Video Has 3D Printed Guns and Drones
M.I.A. just released a self-directed video for the song "Double Bubble Trouble" off her 2013 album Matangi. Her record label, Universal Music Group, initially blocked the clip for "copyright grounds." But the ban has been lifted.
You're now free to watch the agitpop rapper build a case that "1984 IS NOW" through 3D-printed guns, Day-glo drones, and some sick vape tricks. The sinister techno-futurism is set amidst a grimy backdrop of third world bedrooms, council estates, and makeout parties that should be familiar from her cinematic oeuvre.
It looks like that's her son, Ikhyd Edgar Arular Bronfman, on the motor bike with a bunch of kids taking a break from taking selfies (about 34 seconds in).
At one point, the woman dancing behind M.I.A. fan 3D-printed guns around her like the arms of a Hindu goddess. The effect calls to mind Kali, the dark mother, rather than the album's namesake.
