Man Continues to Evade Police After Illegal Base Jump From Ski Lift
Police are still searching for a man who pried open the doors of a gondola lift and illegally base jumped 1,500 feet in a tribute to an extreme skier who died jumping off a cliff.
The stunt was apparently dedicated to Shane McConkey, who jumped from the same Peak to Peak gondola when it opened. McConkey died in 2009 when his parachute failed to deploy off a 2,000-foot cliff jump in Northern Italy.
Police tried to arrest the man when he landed from his jump last Thursday, but he somehow evaded them.
"A Whistler Blackcomb patroller and RCMP travelled to the landing zone with the intent to arrest the individual, who was not apprehended despite an extensive search."
The woman in the video told police she didn't know the man "and was just sightseeing."
Authorities say in addition to the illegal jump, the two caused $10,000 worth of damage to the gondola by forcing the doors open.
