Man Survives Being Hit "Straight-On" by 110 MPH Amtrak Train
Friday morning, a 22-year-old Indiana man survived being struck by an Amtrak train reportedly traveling 110 mph. The man suffered only a few broken bones, despite being thrown more than 20 feet from the track.
Darryle See was walking along the west-bound train tracks in Michigan City, Indiana when the accident occurred, according to LaPorte County Police Maj. John Boyd. The Chicago-bound train reportedly sounded its horn several times, but See, who was listening to music with headphones, did not hear the warnings.
“The conductor said it was a straight-on hit,” Boyd told the Northwest Indiana Times.
Boyd said it was the first time in his 20-year career that he'd heard of someone surviving such an accident.
“It was absolutely amazing,” he told NBC Chicago. “I’ve seen a number of people get hit by trains and it’s never a good thing."
Boyd added that See was conscious and alert when police arrived on the scene. “I never would have guessed he was the victim,” he said.
See's grandmother, Helen Hugley, said See suffered fractures in his pelvis and non-life threatening injuries to his neck. "He's going to make it," she said. "He says he doesn't remember anything until he woke up on the other side of the tracks."
