With a large portion of the national conversation about trans rights hinging on a strawman argument about predatory bathroom behavior, the news of a rape of a 25-year-old trans woman at New York’s historic Stonewall Inn on Saturday night should be as enlightening as it is sobering. (Reminder: Trans people are not a threat, but they are threatened.) Reports Gothamist:

According to police, the incident happened around 11:40 p.m. Saturday night when the 25-year-old victim was inside a single-occupancy unisex bathroom at the bar on Christopher Street. She told police that a man came into the bathroom claiming he only needed to wash his hands, then proceeded to grope and rape her.

The man fled the scene, and the victim also left the bar after the incident. She returned about an hour later, and called 911. She was taken to Lenox Hill Hospital for treatment.

The NYPD has since released surveillance photos of the woman’s suspected attacker (above). His description is as follows:

“The case is going well. People inside the Stonewall know him, and we will go from there,” said Robert Boyce, Chief of Detectives, NYPD. Watch ABC7's report on the incident below:
