Murder of Transgender Woman Now Being Investigated as a Hate Crime

A transgender woman's death is now being investigated as a hate crime crime by the NYPD, after 21-year-old Islan Nettles was brutally attacked last week, before eventually succumbing to her injuries on Thursday.

Nettles was walking through Harlem with a friend (who was also transgender) last Saturday night when they were attacked by a group of men. One of the group punched Nettles in the face. Witnesses to the crime reported initially that they didn't hear the attackers yelling any anti-gay slurs, but later told the NYPD that the attackers were shouting homophobic remarks.

This follows a surge in recent months in hate crimes in New York City. Gay men have been shot and killed, attacked by Knicks fans in broad daylight, knocked unconscious, and kicked to the ground.

Charges against the suspect, 20-year-old Paris Wilson, haven't been upgraded to a hate crime yet, as police wait on a medical examiner's ruling on the cause of death.

She hung out in front of my building all the time. My next door neighbor, who is also transgender, was her best friend and she is devastated. The transgender community in Harlem is so brave, and has been more and more visible in recent years, and I hope this doesn't change that. Word is that Paris Wilson actually knew Islan and was stunting for his friends. He beat her to a fucking pulp. I hope they lock his ass up and throw away the key.

You're not suggesting that being embarrassed because you hit on someone whom you didn't realize was trans, even remotely justifies violence, let alone killing someone, are you? One is having your feewings hurt, the other is being beaten to death. Come on. He beat her to death because his ego was bruised. He should be executed.

Good. Max, you could at least include the details. The accused knew the victim through facebook and was flirting with her until his friends told him she was trans. He beat her because she 'embarrassed him in front of his friends'. He beat her to death because his precious male ego was momentarily embarrassed. Beat her to death. in front of his friends. to show them he is a 'real man'.

I hope he hangs. He deserves it.

This makes it worse to me. If he just hated all transgender people, at least he's just an ass and stupid and uninformed and a violent murderous fuck. Now he's something more: he's the embodiment of what's wrong with how we raise our boys to think. So what if he was flirting with a transgender person? This should not cause a break in his psyche. This should not end a life (or two). We need to do better.

Also, it would be "anti-trans" and "transphobic", not "anti-gay" and "homophobic". Since, you know, she was murdered because she was trans*, not because of her sexuality.
