The immaturity factor in this is really astounding to me; these people are 20 years old, not 14 for cryin out loud. Jabaree says about the party house he rented with his teammates, "We thought it was going to be a low-key, under-the-radar type deal where we could just relax."

Suuuuuuuuure. You pictured the four of you swirling brandy by the fire, talking politics or reading the classics, listening to some smooth jazz with the shades drawn. Maybe you thought you could catch up on your knitting? No parties, Nope. And i'm sure this is the first "out-of-hand" incident that has ever happened at your party-house, er, low-key relaxation rental. "we didn't think anything like this could happen." Well, that's a red flag; either you're lying or just stupid. These are 20 year old adults. That is worrisome.

I totally understand where you're coming from, but that kind of denial is found at all ages and levels of society, starting with high-level government officials and CEOs of corporations. Although, I guess you could make the argument that they are all immature, too. It's just lying, although they do sound stupid.

Oh absolutely; they could be as dishonest in 10 years, for sure. My point was that the whole scene of sneaking off campus to a wild party-house and all the ridiculousness that ensued- does that not strike you as odd for 20 year olds? I don't know, perhaps it's just where/how I grew up. We certainly got into a lot of trouble drinking and doing drugs, lying about where we were, hooking up or carrying on with boys, but that was at 14, maybe 16. Not when you're an adult in college, and not if you're trying to get into the Navy for Pete's sake. I drank in college, but not that hog-wild keg-orgy high school shit, and I think most people have grown up a bit by then.

Am I way off on this? When do people start drinking down there? (I'm in rural Canada, and I was always allowed a beer with dinner, but I was probably 13 before I had 3 at once.)

Yeah, I think you are way off. Half of all kids who start college in the US drop out, and most of that is a direct result of living "out of control" for the first time in their lives

Well that's my point- I think it's better to introduce freedoms such as drinking earlier and more slowly, and in the supervised environment of your parents house, rather than choose college as a time to start experimenting. That's a really expensive and possibly life-ruining way to learn how to moderate your drinking, or learn that you are one of those people who just shouldn't. By the time I was in college at 17, I'd pretty much learned my lesson against 'drinking games' and shots in general.

Story in the Balitmore Sun says the neighbors were disturbed by the crowds and behavior at this house. No one reported it to the police or the Naval Academy? If so, someone was looking the other way. Accountability has to go up the chain of command on this one to whomever at the Academy knew of this house, and perhaps others, and turned a blind eye. Any statement from the Maryland Senators or the Representative from this district?

This happens in college towns pretty regularly. Where I went to school there were townies & families living in a neighborhood packed with students renting houses. Some of them might be the ones renting out the property or don't want to risk not being able to rent their place down the road. A party had to get super out of control for anyone to call the cops usually. The only party I ever went to in that neighborhood in my 4 years there that cops even showed up to was one where a girl called them because she was mad that she didn't get invited.

when I was in college I lived in one of the marching band houses that had at least one party a week during football season and got frequent noise complaints from the "normal people" in the house behind us.

the landlord didn't give a shit as long as we were able to pay the rent on time, and if the cops showed up we'd just have all the underage drunk people go upstairs while one of the official tenants talked to them at the front door, and it never resulted in anything beyond "turn down the music and move the beer pong table inside, the neighbors complained again"

Meh, it's a pretty common practice in college towns. A lot of Greek houses will do this—especially when there are heavy restrictions on alcohol at Greek parties.

If it was a college town, they may not have been able to make the distinction between Navy and regular college knuckleheads. I doubt they displayed any insignia or advertised it otherwise. Although, I don't live there, it could have been obvious for all I know.
