NC Man Won't Be Charged After Firing His Gun and Hitting a 10-Year-Old
The man who fired the bullet that struck 10-year-old Zack Reno of Davidson County, North Carolina, will not be charged with a crime.
Investigators say the unnamed man fired a single shot while performing "maintenance" on his weapon, striking Zack in the right hip and arm as he played outside his home some 1,200 feet away.
Zack, who sustained non-life threatening injuries, was taken to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem. He was released later that day.
"We located the individual who did the shooting," Sheriff David Grice told The Lexington Dispatch. "He was shooting from his front porch. He fired one round after cleaning his gun in what he thought was a safe direction and hit that kid."
A strip of woods reportedly separates the man's porch and the boy's residence.
The Davidson County District Attorney’s Office has reviewed the case and, together with the local Sheriff's Office, determined that no charges would be filed against the shooter.
"[Zack] was unlucky that he got hit," the sheriff said, "but he was lucky he got hit the way he did."
