The McKibbin Lofts, long a home (squat?) to the many artists, musicians, and vagrants who tumble through the crazy ol' Big Apple, has been issued a partial vacate order, slapped coldly on its front door by the Department of Buildings last Friday.

According to Gothamist, the vacate order deems conditions at 255 McKibbin "immediately perilous to life." The fourth and fifth floors of the loft building are currently the only floors that are legal to live on as of a certificate of occupancy granted in 2012.

Gothamist also reports that several residents from 248 McKibbin, the lofts across the street, were asked to vacate their domiciles in March of 2013.

The complaint against 255 McKibbin cites "artist studios" as one of the reasons for immediate vacancy:

CELLAR OCCUPIED AS ARTIST STUDIOS WITH BATHROOMS & KITCHENS EGRESS INADEQUATE INSTALLED GAS LINES AND 3PC BATHROOMS

An all-day party event that had been scheduled to happen at the lofts this Saturday has been subtly moved to another location.

Thankfully, there will be alternatives for all the potentially displaced New Yorkers out there.
