NYU President John Sexton, who oversaw the school’s underfunded expansion into the United Arab Emirates and China (and even more of lower Manhattan), will step down in 2016. No word on whether he’ll have to relinquish his subsidized Fire Island beach house.

Good fucking riddance, Sexton is an example of what's wrong with the education system. While he was out picking out his beach house NYU cut my husband's research funding off.

A very good book will eventually be written about this period in American higher education. NYU's subsidized weekend homes, Penn State's for-all-intents-and-purposes officially sanctioned child molestation, and Oregon's Kublai-Khan-decreed football palace will figure as crucial examples of how this entire industry hopelessly lost its way.

I have a Master's from NYU (and the debt to prove it!). I got a good education, got into my preferred PhD program, and all that, so the money was worth it. But man, NYU is fucked up. The one great thing about its metastatic expansion into Manhattan is that I always had a place to go to the bathroom in the city. But, man, it's exactly the opposite of how I would design my ideal university.
