One Direction: This Is Us topped the Labor Day weekend box office with $17 million. But the weekend's big surprise was the Spanish-language film Instructions Not Included, which opened in fifth place with $7.5 million from just 347 theaters.

When was the last time a $17m take won the box office for a huge weekend like Labor Day? I've mostly tuned movies out all summer do to the horrible pile of crap that's been released, but that sounds crazy. Hollywood should be shitting themselves with fear right now.

Here is a table from Box Office Mojo. Seventeen million is rather decent for this picture. Spielberg's prediction might have been off.

Yeah, I mean 17 million for these guys sounds about right, but that sounds like a fourth place finisher rather than #1. But looking around another one of those tables, I see that this summer is actually %5.4 more profitable for movies as a whole than last summer. I guess my perceptions were wrong.

On the Today Show last week at Times Square near the studio One Direction had a concert. I stopped trying to guess how many people were there, #1 this weekend is no surprise.

If seventeen mil wins the holiday weekend, that implies that most people were doing something else besides going to the movies. If anybody here was doing that thing (other than going to the movies), we'd like to know what it was.

That Instructions Not Included movie sounds awful.

Valentin (Eugenio Derbez) is Acapulco's resident playboy-until a former fling leaves a baby on his doorstep and takes off without a trace. Valentin leaves Mexico for Los Angeles to find the baby's mother, but only ends up finding a new home for himself and his newfound daughter, Maggie (Loreto Peralta). An unlikely father figure, Valentin raises Maggie for six years, while also establishing himself as one of Hollywood's top stuntmen to pay the bills, with Maggie acting as his on-set coach. AsValentin raises Maggie, she forces him to grow up too. But their unique and offbeat family is threatened when Maggie's birth mom shows up out of the blue, and Valentin realizes he's in danger of losing his daughter- and his best friend.
