Lt. Keith Boyd of the Marin County sheriff's office confirmed in a press conference this afternoon that beloved actor Robin Williams did commit suicide in his home in Tiburon, Calif. on Monday morning. He died of "asphyxia due to hanging," and cuts were also found on his wrists. Boyd said Williams was found by his personal assistant with a belt around his neck.

Williams' children weren't home when he died. Yesterday, his wife Susan Schneider said not to focus on his death, "but on the countless moments of joy and laughter he gave to millions." She had last seen him around 10:30 p.m. on Sunday night, and she left the house at about 10:30 Monday morning thinking he was still asleep. She came back when she heard the news of his death.

Boyd declined to say whether or not a suicide note was found.

Update: Boyd gave reporters a few more details about the circumstances of William's death:

"Mr. Williams' personal assistant was able to gain access to Mr. Williams' bedroom and entered the bedroom to find Mr. Williams clothed in a seated position, unresponsive, with a belt secured around his neck with the other end of the [belt] wedged between the … closet door and the door frame. His right shoulder area was touching the door with his body perpendicular to the door and slightly suspended."
