Prosecutor: Germanwings Co-Pilot Researched Suicide, Cockpit Security
In the days before he intentionally crashed Germanwings Flight 9525 into the French Alps, co-pilot Andreas Lubitz reportedly searched online for information about suicide and the strength of cockpit doors.
The New York Times reports that prosecutors in Duesseldorf said they were able to reconstruct the searches made on Lubitz’s iPad between March 16 and March 23. From the Times:
“During this time the user was searching for medical treatments, as well as informing himself about ways and possibilities of killing himself,” they said in a statement.
“On at least one day the person concerned also spent several minutes looking up search terms about cockpit doors and their safety measures,” the statement said
Meanwhile, French authorities have reportedly recovered the doomed flight’s second flight recorder from the crash site. The recorder, according to an official who spoke with the Times, does not appear to be damaged.
