While discussing recent deadly attacks against police officers in Dallas and Baton Rouge, Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke stopped to offer some “good news” onstage at the Republican National Convention on Monday: A Baltimore officer charged with the involuntary manslaughter of Freddie Gray had been acquitted.
“Lieutenant Brian Rice was acquitted on all charges, in the malicious prosecution of State’s Attorney Marilyn Mosby,” said Clarke, receiving the biggest cheer of the night at the point, according to Gawker reporter Ashley Feinberg.
During his speech, Clarke also paraphrased a passage from Martin Luther King’s “Letter from Birmingham Jail” and characterized the actions of the Black Lives Matter movement as “anarchy.”
