Stolen Truck Crashes Into NYC Bus, Killing Driver and Injuring 4
A stolen truck collided with a New York City bus early Wednesday morning, sending both vehicles crashing onto a Greenwich Village sidewalk and into a building. One person—reportedly the bus driver—was killed and at least four others were injured.
The accident occurred at about 5: 30 a.m. at Seventh Ave. and W. 14th Street. Police were reportedly chasing the stolen truck just before the accident.
"What appears to be a stolen box truck was traveling south on 7th Avenue when it stuck an M14 bus at the corner of 7th Avenue," Kevin Ortiz, a spokesman for the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, told the New York Times.
The New York Daily News is reporting that the bus driver, William Pena, was pronounced dead at the scene. Pena has been driving city buses since 1996. Two passengers were also injured in the crash.
The driver of the stolen truck—reportedly an 18 Rabbits Granola truck—suffered minor neck injuries and was arrested at the scene.
A street vendor, who was standing on the sidewalk, was severely injured, according to Ortiz.
