Love in a time of SARS

Gawker · 05/02/03 11:10AM

601am's Aaron Bailey notes that Toronto Craig's List personals now include "SARS-free" as a requirement. I was going to use the word "asinine" but then I realized that the title of the ad is "convince me why I shouldn't order porn" and it seems like needless redundancy.

The L Magazine

Gawker · 04/14/03 01:53PM

601am's Aaron Bailey has a report on The L magazine, a soon to be lauched pocket events-and-entertainment guide for downtown Manhattan and parts of Brooklyn. Completely irrelevant quote from L Editor, Scott Stedman: "British people do look like they have Downs syndrome."

Smoking ban: week 1

Gawker · 04/08/03 12:59PM

Lockhart Steele reports from, as usual, the Lower East Side: The bartender to a patron at The Magician: "You know, if you smoke in the back room, I probably won't notice. But don't get used to it. This isn't going to be one of those smoking bars." Spotted on Ludlow: petitions to "ban the ban." Also: JVG's dissenting opinion and Aaron Bailey notes some additional downsides.

In case of hangover

Gawker · 03/17/03 12:06PM

Journalists and media people should fully appreciate today's Daily Candy contribution to the overall health and welfare of Manhattanites: a list of preventative hangover measures. [Ed. noteI promised I'd stop making "drunken hack" jokes if it got old...Oh, who are we kidding? It never does.] Things to take before you go drinking: vitamin B complex, milk thistle, and anti-oxidents. Aaron Bailey adds: two codeine "imported" from Canada upon returning home.

McDonald's: healthier than Starbucks and WiFi to boot

Gawker · 03/12/03 05:06PM

Aaron Bailey points out that under McDonald's new WiFi program (buy a combo meal and get an hour of wireless access free), you save both money and calories. A cheeseburger meal apparently has fewer calories than blueberry crumbcake and hot cocoa. So it's really just the idea of choosing McDonald's over Starbucks that frightens people.

Letter to Olivia

Gawker · 02/27/03 05:16PM

Aaron Bailey's letter to second-grader "Olivia" on why New York is so special: "For fun, we get drunk at bars that stay open until 4am. Most cities across the country make their bars close at 2am. That's why I live here. The party scene is unbelievable! The other day, I saw two supermodels kissingeach other! Where else can you see that?! No where, I tell you. Well, I hope you can visit New York soon and see what I'm talking about."

Phoning Monaco

Gawker · 02/06/03 11:53AM

601am's Aaron Bailey: "Next time you need to ring Prince Albert or your billionaire friend who has his yacht docked in Monte Carlo, pick up a yellow payphone. Verizon has ads on the subway touting 25-cent calls to, among other places, Monaco from payphones placed around NYC."

Taxi TV pt. 2

Gawker · 01/31/03 04:11PM

Aaron Bailey reviews taxi TV: "The incessant ad spots for NY1, NYC2012, and Chamonix Cream were utterly annoying. These played in addition to the 'Hi, this is the bum who lives on the corner of Lafayette and Houston, don't forget to buckle up!' warning. Public service announcement: The 'shut the fuck up' button is on the upper-left hand corner of the screen. Push it before telling your driver where you're going."

Renee Zellweger snorting?

Gawker · 01/21/03 10:36AM

Aaron Bailey notes that Renee Zellweger appeared to be snorting something just as NBC cut to a commercial break during the Golden Globes. Any confirmation?
