Abu Ghraib Victims Richly Compensated for Their Troubles

Hamilton Nolan · 01/09/13 01:35PM

Six dozen Iraqis who were imprisoned by Americans at Abu Ghraib and elsewhere during the Iraq War sued a private U.S. contractor that provided employees to the prison. According to the NYT, "The plaintiffs complained of 'heinous acts' and torture at the hands of military and contractor personnel, including rape and sexual assault, beatings, forced nudity, humiliation and isolation." Not to worry, though—they are being fairly compensated for their discomfort.

Uruguay Has the President of Your Dreams

Hamilton Nolan · 01/07/13 09:50AM

I'm ashamed to say that I was completely unfamiliar with the exploits of Jose Mujica, the onetime guerilla fighter who has been president of Uruguay since 2010. (So this is not "news" per se, but education is power.) Having been brought up to date by an excellent Simon Romero story on Mr. Mujica this weekend, we are prepared to declare him The President of Our Dreams Who Is the President You Would Design in Your Imagination But Never Expect to Exist in the Real World. Chuck Hagel Will Be Obama's Not-At-All Controversial Nominee for Secretary of Defense

Taylor Berman · 01/06/13 02:50PM

According to Politico, President Obama will nominate former Republican Senator Chuck Hagel as Secretary of Defense on Monday. For those dreading the current, post-fiscal cliff lull in political bickering, the announcement will come as great news; Hagel has already faced criticism for anti-gay remarks in 1998, an interview in which he discussed the "Jewish lobby" in 2007, and for breaking ranks with Republicans during the Iraq War.

Mallory Ortberg · 01/05/13 11:36AM

The first comedian-founded atheist church in England is set to hold its first monthly service tomorrow. Pippa Evans (a "musical improv comedian") and Sanderson Jones (just a regular talking comedian) came up with the idea together.

Adam and Eve, Not Ford and Accord: Illinois Gay Marriage Tacked as Amendment to Rental Car Bill

Robert Kessler · 01/03/13 01:27PM

The future of gay couples' right to marry in Illinois could very well, as god intended, rely on the automobile industry. Illinois Senators have attached the legalization of gay marriage as an amendment to House Bill 4963, which itself amends the state's Collateral Recovery Act. Feasibly, a bill which seeks to "define 'automobile rental company'" could also end up defining marriage in the nation's fifth largest state.

Americans Aren't Using Enough Electricity

Hamilton Nolan · 01/03/13 10:10AM

If there's one thing that made this country great for the last two hundred years, it's the utility companies that built huge, fossil-fuel-burning power plants to pump out all the electricity this hungry, greedy nation could use. And how do we repay these fine industrialists now? By slowing down our electricity use. Is this Russia?

Hugh Hefner Proves that 2013 is Going to be the Year of Love

MTanzer · 01/01/13 02:17PM

2012 saw the public splits of Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes, Heidi Klum and Seal, Will Arnett and Amy Poehler, amongst other couples. After 30 years of marriage, Rhea Perlman and Danny Devito called it quits in October. Their breakup was the official death of love as we knew it. There was no hope.
