Snowstorm Panic At Bauer Publishing

Ryan Tate · 03/01/09 08:15PM

We hear Bauer Publishing just summoned its entire staff to the office in a frantic effort to get ahead of the coming New York snowstorm. Bad weather + Media depression = panic!

More Media Cuts

cityfile · 11/14/08 02:40PM

More layoffs today in the wonderful world of media: In addition to cuts at EW and Essence, 8-10 people were let go yesterday from InStyle. Blackbook canned its creative director. Jim Cramer's NYC-based finance site, TheStreet.com, closed its offices in San Francisco. Bauer Publishing laid off five editorial people from Life & Style. Forbes dismissed staffers assigned to ForbesAutos.com, scaled back ForbesTraveler.com, and closed its conference business. But despite rumors to the contrary, Nylon says it is not closing down, so it isn't all bad news today.

New Editor At Life & Style?

Ryan Tate · 10/02/08 08:46PM

We're told Bauer Publishing chief Hubert Boehle has grown tired of the never-ending stream of outside editors atop his celebrity fashion title Life & Style. He finds them hapless. The solution: Boehle will bring in Dan Wakeford, executive editor of another Bauer celebrity mag, In Touch, as top editor. "He wasn't given any choice in the matter," our tipster said. With both the fashion industry and celebrity magazines socked by the economy, he's got his work cut out for him.

Teen magazine publisher discovers Web, 13 years too late

Owen Thomas · 06/05/08 04:40PM

Bauer Publishing has launched 4tnz, a website which appears to be cut-and-pasted from its teenage print titles and scanned onto the Web. "4tnz is Bauer Publishing’s first major foray into online publishing," the press release reads, and it shows. There are quizzes, but instead of having the answers printed upside-down at the bottom of the page, you can see the answers right-side up, in your browser window. One could make an observation about how it looks like Bauer's young-teen audience has built the site for the publisher. But that's too easy. The real problem is that 4tnz's would-be readers already have built their own equivalents, on MySpace and Tumblr and thousands of other websites. They have no need of the likes of Bauer.

Pissed Publicists Spurned At Last Night's 'In Touch' Party!

Choire · 10/11/07 12:25PM

In Touch Weekly's fifth anniversary party and obligatory afterparty went down last night at Tenjune in the Meatpacking. We hear a bunch of folks didn't even make it in the door. A publicist of our acquaintance says: "A bunch of us—from television, film, lifestyle brands, hotels, personal reps—were in line for 2+ hours and never let in while the bouncer 'Alex' at Tenjune let his friends (AKA emaciated underage girls) in. They turned away a reporter from The New York Times but let in Ben Widdicomb from the New York Daily News.... I mean, Tenjune is over, they are lucky the party was there and it looked like a hot spot for the night. And we all collectively agreed that we will not buy the magazine ever again or give our projects or celebs to them. We'd rather go to Life & Style! Seriously." Well, that'll be easy, since they have the same editor!

Choire · 09/18/07 08:40AM

We're still not all sure what's going on at Bauer Publishing out in the wilds of New Jersey. But what has happened is that the editor of In Touch is now also the editor of Life & Style. Which is nutty? But what that means for the staff or the mag (if anything!) we don't yet know. [Mediaweek]

Why Working At Bauer Sucks

Doree Shafrir · 07/11/07 04:52PM

The classy way that Bauer handled the shuttering of Cocktailhiring four people to start the day it closed, for one thing!—made us wonder just what else goes on in the offices in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey. You probably already knew that our German friends who run the home of Life & Style and In Touch are as cheap as anything. But what you might not have known was just how cheap. Let's bring on the disgruntled Bauer staffers!

'Cocktail' Editor Is Really, Truly Sorry About Everything

Doree Shafrir · 07/11/07 01:42PM

As the staffers of Bauer's ill-fated launch were picking up the pieces of their short-lived careers in Englewood Cliffs, they received an inadvertent forward from the mag's editor-in-chief, Maria Lissandrello, that was meant for the eyes of one staffer only. Some context: Lissandrello, unlike many of her staff (several of whom had started only on Monday, when the magazine shut down), was quickly installed at Women's World when Cocktail folded; she had been at First for Women before. Yeah, we get them confused too. The correspondence after the jump. (Later today, we'll have more on why you should think twice about accepting a job offer from Bauer. But for now, enjoy!)

Bauer Publishing Hedges Its Bets, Part 2

Jesse · 03/02/06 10:25AM

Yesterday's Life & Style has a great speculative scoop: Could hottie stoner Matthew McConaughey be married? Perhaps to his girlfriend, Penelope Cruz? The mag has a photo of him wearing what seems to be a wedding band on his left ring finger, so it would seem he's done the deed, right? Well, actually, no: As the backwards Nike swoosh on his shorts indicates, the photo is flipped and the ring is on his far less interesting right hand. Which the folks at L&S's Bauer stablemate, In Touch Weekly, were able to figure out.

'Life & Style Weekly' Axes an Executive Editor

Jesse · 02/10/06 10:54AM

The latest news from celeb-mag-land is that Tamara Glenny, the former high-ranking YM editor who joined Bauer's Life & Style Weekly over the summer as executive editor, has just been canned from Bauer's Life & Style Weekly as executive editor. A spy on the Englewood Cliffs beat gives some inside color:
