It's never been tougher for young New Yorkers trying to break into the media business: No one is hiring, of course, and to make matters worse, you now not only have to compete with children of the rich and prominent for unpaid internships, but with actual grown-up celebrities attempting to grab a bit of cheap publicity.

The celeb-intern trend is out of control, and it's partially our fault! Playing the "fabulist angle" forward, model-socialite-publishing heiress Lydia Hearst is interning for Blackbook.

The Daily Beast picks Fabiola Beracasa for its "Smart People Recommend" feature and then the "New York correspondent" proceeds to recommend reading BlackBook since "it always seems to be the first to tell readers what's next in nightlife, entertainment, fashion, and arts"? It's enough to make your head spin on a Friday afternoon! [TDB]

In this paranoid media climate, you can't even write an salient tongue-in-cheek piece about "desperate drinking" in a desperate media landscape without people assuming that you're sending some message that you've lost your job. Foster, author of a piece for BlackBook called "Desperate Drinking in Desperate Times," says that ever since he and co-writer Ben published the piece, "I've had at least 20 calls and/or emails asking if [editor] Chris Mohney laid me off via [Blackberry message] last night."

While we were writing that post about how there are too many layoffs to keep track of, we found out the creative director at BlackBook has been laid off, not to be replaced. Meh. [FWD]

More layoffs today in the wonderful world of media: In addition to cuts at EW and Essence, 8-10 people were let go yesterday from InStyle. Blackbook canned its creative director. Jim Cramer's NYC-based finance site, TheStreet.com, closed its offices in San Francisco. Bauer Publishing laid off five editorial people from Life & Style. Forbes dismissed staffers assigned to ForbesAutos.com, scaled back ForbesTraveler.com, and closed its conference business. But despite rumors to the contrary, Nylon says it is not closing down, so it isn't all bad news today.
