Overnight on Friday, gunmen linked to Al Qaeda seized a luxury hotel, popular with Westerners, in the capital of Burkina Faso. By Saturday morning, security forces had killed four attackers, the Associated Press reports. At least 23 other people were also killed.

Michel Kafando, the interim president of Burkina Faso, returned to power today after being ousted in a military coup last week. The coup, carried out by supporters of former president Blaise Compaoré, was met with protests among the Burkinabe people and condemnation from fellow leaders of West African nations.

There were no survivors of the 110-passenger Air Algerie flight that crashed in Mali this week, French president Francois Hollande said today. Nearly half of the plane's passengers were French nationals.
