Chris Buckley's Annus Horribilis

Pareene · 10/20/08 09:02AM

Boy, Christopher Buckley's life sucks, he revealed in the Sunday Times to Sheryl Gay Stolberg. His dad and mom died. And oh, also, all the blogs and the New York Post reported on the son he had out of wedlock with his former book publicist and how Wm F. Buckley excluded this child from his will. And then Buckley endorsed Barack Obama and the National Review fired him! All this happened after his dad, who was kind of a famous asshole, died, and maybe now Chris Buckley is trying to be less of an asshole? As he says:

Tina Brown Orgasmic Over Getting Buckley Fired

Ryan Tate · 10/16/08 01:38AM

Though she's a newcomer to the internet, Tina Brown has spent a lifetime honing her ability to self-promote. Which is how the former Vanity Fair editor seemed to have instinctively grasped what was expected of her last night on the Colbert Report: sell the sizzle, not the steak when it comes to her new internet venture, the Daily Beast — and remember that no points are deducted for going a bit over the top, per the self-parodying bloviations of host Stephen Colbert. When it came time to discuss the Beast's central role in getting Christopher Buckley fired from National Review, Brown couldn't just say the incident was exciting — no, she had to claim it turned the whole office into a party! Lest anyone think she was joking, Brown again mentioned how much the firing thrilled her a few breaths later. Brown, who has herself done away with plenty of magazine writers, may be learning the nuts and bolts of the Web on the job, but her gleeful, shameless bloodlust may yet reveal her as a natural for the medium. Buckley Ankles 'National Review'

Pareene · 10/14/08 01:57PM

So Christopher Buckley, the smart-ass novelist son of late conservative intellectual William F. Buckley, went and endorsed Barack Obama in the internet pages of Tina Brown's Daily Beast. He explained, in his endorsement, that he was writing for the Beast because he didn't want to read the hate mail he'd get if he wrote the endorsement at his usual venue, the back page of the National Review. Joke's on him, everyone who reads the National Review Online is even crazier, and the NRO linked everyone to the endorsement! Now it is time for Buckley to write a "wow look at my crazy hate mail" column. And also to quit the National Review! Like forever! Buckley's hate mail column, though, has the advantage of quoting an unnamed editor from the magazine his father founded! "One editor at National Review—a friend of 30 years—emailed me that he thought my opinions 'cretinous.'" Ha, ha, that is probably from Rich Lowry? Buckley continues:

William F. Buckley’s Son Says He Is Pro-Obama

Pareene · 10/10/08 10:59AM

Shock! Christopher Buckley, an East Coast Intellectual Elitist, is supporting Barack Obama for president! It's funny because the intellectual end of the conservative movement has now completely dried up and blown away. And we're defining "intellectual end" broadly enough to include David Brooks btw. Here is the relevant passage from the Buckley column, printed in Tina Brown's weird Daily Brownington Post internet buzz thing:

Christopher Buckley's Son Disinherited

cityfile · 10/02/08 01:15PM

The late William F. Buckley Jr., founder of the National Review, apparently believed that anyone with the bad manners to be conceived during an affair should suffer the consequences. His illegitimate grandson, Jonathan—the son of author Christopher Buckley and the result of his affair with book publicist Irina Woelfe—will not get a penny of his estate, worth tens of millions, reports the Post, after Buckley literally stated in his will that the child was dead to him: "I intentionally make no provision herein for said Jonathan, who for all purposes... shall be deemed to have predeceased me." The details have emerged because Woelfe is filing suit to seek more child support from Christopher, who she claims hasn't wanted to see their son.

William F. Buckley, Asshole Even In Death

Pareene · 10/01/08 10:26AM

Conservative thinkin' guy William F. Buckley left his huge fortune almost entirely to his son, novelist Christopher Buckley. The rest went to Chris Buckley's two children with his wife. None of it went to Chris Buckley's third child, who he fathered with his former publicist. That child, 7-year-old Johnathan, suffers from ADHD. Buckley pays $3k a month to the mother, Irina Woelfle. Woelfle would maybe like that amount raised a bit, because now Chris Buckley has like tens of millions of dollars! But rascally old William F. Buckley made sure, on his death bed, to deny this illegitimate grandchild a dime of his fortune. He called him out by name in the will!

Georgette Mosbacher Observes Christopher Buckley

doree · 04/03/07 01:44PM

Georgette Mosbacher's Fifth Avenue apartment is directly across from the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and from the huge windows of her living room—where there is a life-size drawing of herself hanging above the baby grand piano, and fur throws on two settees across the room, and trinkets (decorative knives, feathers, paperweights, commemorative seals) arranged on a console, and photographs and chandeliers and Oriental rugs and velvet and mirrors—one can watch the small figures milling about on the steps of the museum. The elevator opens directly into her apartment, and last evening, in addition to the uniformed attendant, it was packed with people on their way to a party celebrating the publication of 54-year-old Christopher Buckley's new book, Boomsday, which is about a late twentysomething female blogger who proposes that people be given incentives to commit suicide when they reach 75.
