The second-largest auto company in the world was sued by the U.S. Justice Department after it allegedly violated the Clean Air Act by installing illegal emissions devices on nearly 600,000 diesel cars.

According to statistical and computer analysis conducted by the Associated Press, pollution produced by Volkswagen’s skirting of emissions regulations likely caused between 16 and 94 deaths over seven years and cost well over $100 million in the United States alone.
