Eloise illustrator Hilary Knight is having an estate sale. Though Eloise is eternally a precocious six-year-old living atop the Plaza Hotel, she has superb taste, naturally. She is cultured and well-traveled. She has been to Paris and Moscow and the Bawth. She has an uncanny skill of naming pets. She loves dressing up. Oooh how Eloise would have loved this collection.
One Kings Lane is currently hosting Dennis Hopper's estate sale, and you have fewer than three days to decide whether or not their price of $15 for a genuine Dennis-Hopper-owned copy of Michael Madsen's book of poetry is a fair one (of course it's fair. Michael Madsen is a bruised genius, and Dennis Hopper was a modern highwayman. Buy it. Buy it for yourself, or buy it for me if it hasn't sold out already).
Earlier this week, Sotheby's auctioned off nearly 1,000 items from the estate of socialite and philanthropist Brooke Astor (she of the famously monstrous son). Because rich people's used items are worth even more than other rich people think they are, the sale pulled in millions more than expected—almost twice as much, in fact—for a grand total of $18.8M. Now that the auctioneer's gavel has dropped, let's all gawp in astonishment at how much rich people are willing to pay for some truly weird second-hand junk:
