During a CNN panel discussion on Tuesday, former Reagan aide Jeffrey Lord argued that Donald Trump’s widely condemned comments about Judge Gonzalo Curiel were not, in fact, racist and were instead pointing out racism.

On Monday, Democratic congressman Filemon Vela offered Donald Trump some unsolicited advice on the placement of his “frankly astounding and asinine” border wall, recommending the Republican nominee “shove it up [his] ass,” which is racist.

Alex Jones’s paranoid rantings have always been fun, sure, but they never really held any real world significance. Now that our presumptive Republican nominee gets a good portion of his news from Jones and others like him, though, it actually matters when these radio crackpots say things like, oh, “this [Trump University] judge is the equivalent of a Hispanic grand dragon,” for instance.

For months, Donald Trump has been attempting to discount as racist the federal judge overseeing two class-action lawsuits against Trump University. Former House speaker Newt Gingrich, who has otherwise been very supportive of Trump, called the presumptive Republican nominee’s most recent attacks on the judge “one of the worst mistakes Trump has made. I think it’s inexcusable.”

Since Donald Trump began his overtly racial attacks on the judge overseeing the Trump University lawsuit, leading Democrats and Republicans have rightly denounced the presidential nominee’s comments as wrong and bad.

In a recent interview, Republican nominee Donald Trump called the “Mexican heritage” of the federal judge overseeing the Trump University lawsuit “an absolute” conflict of interest, The Wall Street Journal reports.

At a rally Saturday, Donald Trump took a moment to reflect on the California class-action lawsuit he is facing over the now-defunct Trump University, and to specifically comment on the ethnicity of the judge overseeing the case: “I believe he happens to be Spanish, which is fine. He’s Hispanic—which is fine.”
