Where Is Our Dependency on Hook-Up Apps Taking Us?

Rich Juzwiak · 08/15/16 12:25PM

I spent one Saturday morning late last year on my couch toggling back from Grindr to Scruff to Grindr to Scruff. I don’t remember what I was looking for; all I remember is that I was looking. At some point, I realized three hours had passed, and I still hadn’t moved from my couch or started my day. Even if I had, it undoubtedly would have been interrupted by a hook-up app, and/or a hook-up, though the latter was far less likely.

The Daily Beast Removes Article About Olympic Athletes Using Grindr

J.K. Trotter · 08/12/16 07:00AM

On Wednesday, The Daily Beast published an article describing a reporter’s attempts to use several dating apps, such as Tinder and Grindr, near the Olympic Village in the Rio de Janeiro suburb of Barra da Tijuca. The piece, which was written by London correspondent Nico Hines, was widely condemned after readers realized that it was possible to identify a number of closeted gay Olympic athletes with whom Hines, who is straight, had communicated. After substantially editing the text, and appending an apologetic editors’ note, the site completely removed it on Thursday night:

Grindr Pastor Reportedly Told Teen He Was Going to Hell [Update]

The potential for anti-gay Pastor Matt Makela’s hypocrisy is apparently sky high—all the way to heaven, even. Jennifer Kish told Saginaw, Michigan’s WNEM that the disgraced pastor, who was exposed for soliciting gay sex on Grindr earlier this week, made her son 17-year-old son Tyler feel like “if he was going to go to hell for being gay that he might as well go to hell by committing suicide.”

Sam Smith's Fucked-Up Gay Conservatism

Angel-voiced Brit Sam Smith is gay, but not like those terrifying spermwhores who love sex sooooo much and will eat your children because they think it strengthens their boners. He is also 22. Since 22-year-olds routinely spout bullshit about things they know little about in an attempt to render a monolithic prescription regarding how one should live his or her life, it follows that Smith does this in regards to how one should be gay.

Judge Judy Finally Hears Case Involving Grindr

Rich Juzwiak · 07/01/14 09:07AM

Judge Judith Sheindlin on her worst day is smarter than you on your best, but even so she apparently had never heard of Grindr before a Judge Judy case involving two men who had met on the app that aired yesterday. And even though Sheindlin wears her luddite status as proudly as that doily around her neck, she cut right through the bullshit and sussed out what men actually use it for.

An addition to today's Michael Alig profile in the New York Times: "An earlier version of this article misspelled the name of a popular gay dating app. It is Grindr, not Grndr." Oh, Times, never change!

"I'm very proud if Grindr has forced us to up up our game. To brush our teeth. Comb our hair. Eat right. Go to the gym. Be a healthy person. Cut back on the smoking. Cut back on the bad things and look your best. We're men. We visualize." - Grindr CEO, Joel Simkhai

Survey: Almost half of gay hook-up app users admit to having unprotected intercourse at least "sometimes." So stop.

Knowledge doesn't supersede a hatred for condoms in unsafe Grindr encounters, says an apt study.

The Secrets Gay Men Don't Want Straight People to Know

Brian Moylan · 01/06/12 11:34AM

As gay men and lesbians get closer and closer to the mainstream they've often traded in their image as the queer radicals who started the Stonewall Riots for the milquetoast assimilationists who want to get married and have kids and put HRC bumper stickers on their cars. That doesn't mean we're still not queer radicals. It just means we're hiding it from you.
