Documents obtained by the Guardian reveal new information about Homan Square, the “black site” where Chicago police officers detained and interrogated arrestees without booking them or giving them access to a lawyer. Among the revelations: People were taken to Homan for infractions as minor as selling a bootleg Jay Z album.

In February, the Guardian published a deep investigation into Homan Square, a shadowy facility where the Chicago Police Department takes suspects without booking them, entering them into any official database, or giving them access to a telephone or their lawyer. A new Guardian report claims that more than twice as many people have been “disappeared” into Homan as officials initially disclosed.

In an investigation published Tuesday, the Guardian's Spencer Ackerman reports on the existence of a warehouse in Chicago called Homan Square, where police take suspects to keep them out of official databases, deny them legal counsel, and beat them.
