The Prison Journals of "Son of Sam" Serial Killer

Sheila · 03/18/08 11:26AM

Ew: David Berkowitz, the jailed "Son of Sam" serial killer who stalked New York women in the late 70s, has written a book: Son of Hope—The Prison Journals of David Berkowitz, Volume 1. He's a Christian now! Village Voice columnist Michael Musto begs us not to buy it: "I can still vividly remember being a teen harlot when Berkowitz was killing people left and right in my native Brooklyn, and having to race home from the subway after a night at Studio 54, terrified that he'd put an end to my partying." Know who also has a new book out? Jimmy Breslin (The Good Rat), badass Pulitzer-winning reporter who was at the Daily News when he received a weirdo handwritten letter from Berkowitz: "Hello from the gutters of N.Y.C. which are filled with dog manure, vomit, stale wine, urine and blood..." An excerpt of Berkowitz's book follows, which refers to something called "the Force."

His wife is former New York City councilwoman Ronnie Eldridge.

The Underpants Of Pulitzer-Winning 'Daily News' Reporter Jimmy Breslin

Maggie · 01/21/08 12:00PM

Speaking of old school, this weekend the Times featured an epic 2,000-word Alan Feuer profile of legendary Daily News reporter Jimmy Breslin who's got a book out and, who is, much to Feuer's surprise, still alive, kicking-and working! Gee whiz, good for him. Feuer may not be the most erm, precise reporter on the planet, but like any fabulist worth his salt, he's got a good grip on phrase-turning. "Mr. Breslin's growl is actually more of a squawk and not unlike how a pintail duck might sound if it smoked a pack a day through a kazoo," he writes. Of course, that line sounds like it's pulled straight from a Breslin column, but never let's mind that.

Jimmy Breslin goes off the deep end

Gawker · 04/21/03 10:08AM

Pulitzer Prize-winning commentator Jimmy Breslin wrote a column last week for Newsday in which he wrote that dogs are "meaningless," "useless," and "indescribably bothersome." He writes, "Out on the streets of the city there is the revolting sight of people walking along with their dogs and then bending and picking up after them. They humiliate themselves in public, and I cannot understand why a person, having done this, can walk with his head up and even look you in the eye if he catches you staring...On the same sidewalk, a woman dressed for the business day was bent down and picking up after a dog so small that he deserved to be crushed and the woman, after making such a sight of herself, should have been shunned."
