Andy Pemberton, Nearly Sacked Again?

Jesse · 06/01/06 11:20AM

It's a big day today for Women's Wear's media column, which not only reports the likely name of the eventually forthcoming Conde Nast business mag but also suggests — which we almost missed in our excitement over Quote — that Andy Pemberton is on his way out at Spin. He was brought in as editor-in-chief, to succeed Sia Michel, when the mag's new owners finally bought it and started wiping out the old staff — just three months ago. Pemberton's no stranger to unceremonious dumpings, but we do hope this time he didn't bother to unpack his executive desk toys.

Ellen Levine Bumped to Hearst Editorial Director

Jesse · 05/26/06 09:28AM

Another week, another magland up-and-out maybe promotion. Last week it Time M.E. Jim Kelly who was either upped or maybe eased to the brand-new position of company-wide managing editor, where he'll troubleshoot and help recruit but not have direct oversight of any Time Inc. titles. This week it's Good Housekeeping's longtime EIC Ellen Levine, who is being upped or just maybe eased to the brand-new position of Hearst Magazine editorial director, where she'll help develop brand extensions and new titles but not, as we read the memo, have direct oversight of any Hearst titles. While you debate among yourselves whether or not they're promotions, the full Hearst memo — touting, among other things, Levine's "unparalleled record of putting the reader first" — is after the jump.

'Circus' Closes; Clowns Sad

Jesse · 05/18/06 11:27AM

We've never really heard of Circus magazine, and we suspect this entirely our own fault, because we're so inexcusably square. We're told it's a big-deal rock and metal mag, and, like Rolling Stone, it has been around since the late '60s and run by the same guy the whole time. Or, at least, that was the case until yesterday, when freelancers learned it had unceremoniously shut down. In an era when rich Hachette shutters seemingly successful ELLEgirl because projections didn't look good, when rich Mort Zuckerman can't decide whether or not he's actually willing to sink money in Radar, this has got to be the saddest magazine-closure email we've seen:

'Time' M.E. Announcement TK Momentarily! Stop What You're Doing and Prepare!

Jesse · 05/17/06 10:00AM

Yesterday Time Inc. confirmed the simmering rumor and announced that Jim Kelly, the managing editor of Time magazine for the last five years, will be moving up to the 34th floor, where he'll take the office next to EIC John Huey and a newly created title, managing editor of Time Inc. The remaining question: Who will be the new editor of Time?

New 'BlackBook' Chief: Steve Garbarino?

Jesse · 05/11/06 05:20PM

Today's juicy magland rumor? Allegedly Steve Garbarino, the gossipeuse associated at various times with such glossy journals as Vanity Fair and Page Six: The Magazine, is telling folks he has been offered the editorship of BlackBook, which is vacant due to Aaron Hicklin's move to Out. We're reasonably sure it's true he's telling people this; we have no idea if he's telling people the truth. Anyone know?

'NYDN': Movie Critic Axed

Jesse · 05/11/06 02:40PM

And the hemorrhaging continues at the Daily News features department, where today we hear that movie critic Jami Bernard was informed her contract will not be renewed. At this rate, it's only a matter of time, we imagine, till Ben Widdicombe is writing the whole paper. Congrats, Ben.

'Tango' Media: Lies, Lies, Lies!

Jessica · 05/11/06 12:55PM

Tango — the magazine for desperate ladies obsessed with love — has taken their ass and pony show online, and they're looking for a new web editor. In their job listing, they write the following:

'NYDN': Oops, There Goes Another Features-Side Writer

Jesse · 05/08/06 09:03AM

Word came late Friday that yet another of Orly Healy's features writers quit her job. This time it was Breanne L. Heldman — who, according to Nexis, has clocked 128 bylines so far in 2006. It's something like the ninth or 10th departure from the features department since Healy's arrival. Which raises the question: Who the hell's left to write the damned thing anymore?

'Times' Star System Lives On — for Four Years at a Time

Jesse · 05/05/06 10:12AM

Thought the star system at The New York Times died with Howell Raines' editorship? Perhaps in the public eye, yes. But in the way that really matters — the pocketbook — far from it. Since 1990, it turns out, the Times has awarding favored writers a special "senior writer" status — which is to say, a we-like-you cash bonus. But there's a problem! With no one moving out of the senior-writer slots, there's no way to move new people in. And so there was a memo from Bill Keller yesterday: Senior writer terms will now last for only four years, after which you might be renewed but might not be. This way, there'll be new slots opening regularly, and the chance for new hotshots to get their bonuses.

Random Red-Bordered Rumor of the Day: Mike Elliot for 'Time' Topper?

Jesse · 05/04/06 04:34PM

Sure, it's still not entirely clear that Jim Kelly is leaving the helm of Time magazine anytime soon. And, sure, if he is in fact leaving it's not clear when he'll be leaving. But that hasn't stopped speculation about who'll be his potential successor. Here's a rumor, from a source who has at least a touch of an idea about what he speaks, that showed up in the inbox earlier today:

'Times' Seeks Sunday Stylist

Jesse · 05/03/06 10:19AM

Have a burning desire to label "new" trends that have been around for months, if not years? Like looking at Bill Cunningham's fancy pictures of fancy people at really boring fancy parties? Yearn to find a new essay each week about why modern love sucks? Then today, folks, is your lucky day. Luisita Torregrosa, the editor of Sunday Styles, is "realizing a long-held dream and resigning from the paper to write full-time." (Apparently working for a newspaper makes it hard to write full-time.) They need a replacement to start June 30, and resumes should go to Trip Gabriel. One imagines the competition will be tough, however: The New Republic, after all, recently named this the less morally reprehensible half of Gabriel's kingdom. Probably because it's so much less gay.

'Times' PR News: Usnik to Christie's

Jesse · 05/02/06 01:38PM

Random but we think reliable rumor of the day: We hear that Toby Usnik, the No.2 PR person at The New York Times, will be leaving the Gray Lady to go flack for Christie's, the auction house. If we had to guess, we'd bet he's moving up to a top PR job there — finally, a chance for stock grants. Or maybe it's just exhausting doing corporate communications for a company that just faced an enormous vote of no confidence in his management. Either way, Usnik's the second person — after Kathy Park — to leave the Times PR staff in the last few months. Take that whatever it's worth.

'WWD': Jim Kelly Ain't Out the Door Yet

Jesse · 05/01/06 10:20AM

When Lowdown Lloyd Grove reported Friday on Time chief Jim Kelly's impending departure from the job, there was only one unequivocal parameter on its timing. Kelly, Grove wrote, "will give up his post sometime after next month's black-tie Time 100 dinner." Undoubtedly that's true — unless Kelly goes running for the exits in the next seven days, he'll definitely leave his gig sometime after the dinner. But when? Lloyd hinted it could be as early as June. But in today's WWD, Jeff Bercovici and Sara James canvass the Time & Life Building and come to a different conclusion. "Several Time insiders," they report, say Kelly will stick around through at least the Congressional elections in November. Further, Kelly recently signed a multiyear deal with Time Inc., so they're confident he'll stick around the company someplace. And, finally, Bercovici and James speculate there'll be a not-insignificant interval before Kelly moves on if only because there isn't an obvious contender to take over — and the WWDers suspect that Time Inc. EIC John Huey will break with tradition and bring in someone from outside the company. OK, so: Who? Got any good guesses on the next editor of Time? Let us know.

Lloyd Grove: There Is No Santa

Jesse · 04/28/06 09:32AM

Interesting news today from Lloyd Grove. (Huh. That felt weird.) The Lloydster reports that Time's top editor, jolly Jim Kelly, will soon be leaving his post, perhaps as early as June. There's a non-denial from a Time Inc. flack ("Jim Kelly is very much in charge of charting the current and future course of Time magazine") and a non-denial from Jim, too ("I get job offers all the time, and if I'm offered a late-night TV hosting gig, I'm taking it"), and the combination of the two sort of seals it for us. Best we can tell, there aren't any late-night slots open right now, but we're confident Jim will land on his feet somewhere — maybe the vacant Time Inc. editorial director spot? maybe a cushy editor-at-large gig? But never mind his future. The more important question is ours. Will the new managing editor be as solicitous as Jim of the media press? One really hopes so. Bercovici needs his Scotch.
